Most people looking for a Profound alternative are not unhappy with the product. They have looked at what their workload costs on it and started reading.
Profound is a good platform. It is the best funded company in this category at $58.5M including a $35M Series B led by Sequoia, it has the largest independent review base at more than 140 G2 reviews, and it is the only tool in the category with published SOC 2, SSO and SAML. If your purchase has to clear an enterprise security review, it is the shortest path and you can stop reading here.
The reason people look elsewhere is the shape of the pricing.
Where the friction is
Profound publishes two prices and gates most of the product behind a third.
- Starter, $99 a month: ChatGPT only, 50 prompts
- Growth, $399 a month: three engines, 100 prompts
- Enterprise, not published: up to nine engines, including Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Claude, plus multi-company tracking
Checked against Profound's own pricing page on 14 September 2026. The listed prices are billed yearly, so monthly billing costs more.
Three consequences follow, and they are what send people looking.
The $99 tier is not a multi-engine product. It tracks ChatGPT. That is a reasonable place to start and it is not what most people think they are buying at that price.
Google AI Mode is an Enterprise engine. AI Overviews arrives at Growth, but AI Mode, the conversational surface that pulls in Reddit threads and YouTube videos your rankings never reach, requires a sales conversation. For a lot of categories that is the surface where the interesting things happen.
And agencies cannot use it without Enterprise, because tracking multiple companies is an Enterprise entitlement. There is no way to run five clients on a published price.
The same workload, priced across six tools
150 prompts, tracked daily, six engines, one seat, twelve months.
| Tool | Plan this forces | Per month | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peec AI | Pro | $245 | $2,940 |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 plus 125 extra prompts | ~$279, four engines | ~$3,348 |
| Omnia | Enterprise (Pro caps at 100 prompts) | From €499 | From €5,988 |
| Rankscale | Enterprise (Growth caps at 22,000 answers) | $780 | $9,360 |
| AthenaHQ | Enterprise (Starter covers 3,600 of 27,000 credits) | Not published | Not published |
| Profound | Enterprise | Not published | Not published |
The five alternatives
Peec AI, if you want six engines without a sales call
The closest like-for-like replacement for what most people want Profound to be. Six engines are included on every plan from $95: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Both Google surfaces separated, on the entry tier, which is the specific thing Profound gates to Enterprise.
Underneath the visibility chart it breaks every answer into the sources the model read, classified as editorial, corporate, UGC, reference or your own site, so you can tell whether you are losing because nobody writes about you or because your own pages are not being retrieved. It also does server-log analysis through eight integration methods, so you can watch AI crawlers hit your site rather than infer it, which almost nothing else in this price band offers.
For agencies there is a published plan line: $245, $495 and $795 for 3, 10 and 25 client projects, priced in credits with a formula you can check.
Where it is weaker than Profound: founded in 2025, so a much shorter track record. No published SOC 2 or SSO, which rules it out of some enterprise processes. 18 G2 reviews against Profound's 140-plus. No free tier. Engines beyond the included six are billed per engine per month.
Rankscale, if price is the whole problem
The cheapest serious option in the category by a wide margin, and the widest coverage. Ten engines on every plan including both Google surfaces, more than 17 supported in total, starting at $20 a month. Full credit arithmetic published, credits roll over, scheduling from hourly to monthly.
Where it is weaker: bootstrapped and run by two founders, with no published compliance posture, which is a real answer you will have to give your own security team. Traffic analytics were still in beta at the time of writing.
AthenaHQ, if you want the tool to draft the work
Y Combinator backed, built by two former Google Search and DeepMind engineers. Every engine on every tier including Meta AI and Amazon Rufus, which almost nobody else covers, and a genuine free tier at 300 credits so you can see your data before paying. The differentiator is an optimisation agent that turns findings into on-page and off-page recommendations instead of leaving you with a chart.
Where it is weaker: one credit is one AI response, and 3,600 credits on Starter does not survive a real prompt set, so realistic use means an Enterprise conversation. API access on Starter costs extra, priced on request.
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, if you already pay for Semrush
$99 per domain for 25 prompts and four engines, sitting next to the keyword and backlink data that explains it. No new vendor, no procurement, no training. For a lot of in-house teams this is quietly the right answer.
Where it is weaker: four engines, Google reported as one combined number with no separate AI Mode surface, and per-domain and per-seat pricing that punishes anyone with more than one brand.
Omnia, if you want to try before committing
A 14-day trial with no card, then €79 a month for 25 prompts. Both Google surfaces sit in the four engines it enables by default. The prompt discovery is genuinely useful when you are writing a prompt set from scratch, because it surfaces the questions people actually ask about your category rather than your keyword list.
Where it is weaker: the narrowest default engine coverage here, no multi-client plan, and at 150 prompts it becomes the most expensive option in the table.
When to stay on Profound
We would not move a client off it in three situations.
If an information security review decides the purchase, Profound is the only tool in this comparison with published SOC 2, SSO and SAML. Nothing else on this list clears that without a conversation.
If vendor stability is the concern, $58.5M and a Sequoia-led Series B answers it in a way a bootstrapped two-founder team cannot.
And if you were always going to buy Enterprise, the pricing objection disappears. At that level you are comparing platforms rather than price lists, and Profound's agent analytics, multi-company tracking and support model are genuinely strong.
The alternatives above are for everyone else, which in our experience is most teams.
One thing to check before you switch
Whatever you move to, check the one thing that actually determines whether the tool is useful: does it show you the URLs the model read before it answered?
Every tool here reports your visibility. Far fewer show the sources underneath, and that is the only part you can act on. When a competitor gets named and you do not, the sources tell you whether the cited pages are third-party sites you are missing from, which is a digital PR problem, or your own pages that were read and not quoted, which is a content problem. Different budgets, different teams, and a percentage on its own cannot distinguish them.
